2000 U.S. Housewares Spending Report
U.S. consumers spent nearly $63 billion on housewares in 1998, up 7.9% from the previous year, according to the 2000 State of the Industry Report released by the National Housewares Manufacturers Association (NHMA).
Consumers spent $596 per household on housewares products more than on education, fruits and vegetables or dairy products. Tabletop, which includes dinnerware, serving pieces and flatware, and electrics, ranging from kitchen appliances, humidifiers and air purifiers to electric curlers, accounted for nearly one-third of those housewares dollars.
Other highlights of the NHMA’s 2000 State of the Industry Report, published in collaboration with Willard Bishop Consulting, include: U.S. housewares sales have increased an average of 3.3% annually over the past five years. Discount stores/supercenters outperformed all other retailers in housewares, reporting almost three times the sales of the nearest competitor, department stores. Publicly held NHMA companies reported average net profits of 9.1% in 1998, up more than 2 percentage points from 6.9% in 1997.
According to the NHMA, the 2000 Report shows continued optimism for long-term growth in the housewares industry, in spite of mergers and consolidations at retail and supplier levels. Sales have risen consistently with the exception of 1995, and growth is expected to continue in the year 2000.
