Despite sluggish travel and economic trends, 47% of organizations will increase the use of events as a marketing medium in 2003 signaling the importance of doing business face-to-face, according to a report released by The George Johnson Company, an Auburn Hills, MI-based exhibit firm and the MPI Foundation. Events were ranked on par with advertising and direct marketing when it comes to return on investment (ROI). “The importance of events to the marketing mix continues to be on the rise - no other part of the marketing mix has the same power to deepen customer relationships,” said Robert Vallee, Jr., CEO of The George Johnson Co. Event types seen as providing the greatest return on investment were tradeshows and seminars (32% and 22% respectively), followed by event sponsorships (20%) and targeted events like road shows (16%). While marketers did not allocate larger proportions of their budgets to events this year, many industry sectors, such as the automotive and healthcare industries expect to execute sharply more events in the coming year.

Milacron is combining the latest video, Internet and display technology by running live, interactive demonstrations during the NPE show - without machines in its booth. Visitors to the Milacron booth can interact with the demonstration machines via 62" Smart Board touch-screen-computer plasma displays. Each machine demo is being transmitted from Milacron’s Batavia, Ohio, plant to the Smart Boards on four live TV feeds, three from static cameras, and one from a roaming camera whose operator can interact with visitors at the booth. The Smart Board is a touch-screen computer that will display all four video feeds at reduced size or one large view, plus a mirror image of the touch-screen control panel for the featured machine - allowing booth visitors to alter control parameters as if standing at the machine. Two-way audio between presenters in Batavia and Chicago allows show attendees to ask questions or direct camera operators to desired angles. Bob Strickley, VP Sales for Ferromatik Milacron, said, “With these large touch-sensitive screens, we can demonstrate unique software features, show live action, navigate web sites, and even write colorful notes on the screen in electronic ink. It’s a captivating sight for visitors that allows us to provide a surprisingly content-rich presentation without machines on the floor.”
