Wired Venture Links Up With Barnes & Noble For National Online & In-Store Marketing Partnership

In an innovative co-branding partnership between a major book retailer and a prominent media company, Barnes & Noble and Wired Ventures have teamed up to bring added value to shopping for books, both online and in Barnes & Noble stores across the country.

Wired Digital, the online media division of Wired Ventures, Inc., has launched an online bookstore. Available on Wired's online market place Shop Wired, the site will feature selected Wired titles, Wired editors' book recommendations, reviews, commentary, preview chapters and additional links to the latest catalog of Wired books. After previewing the Wired selections, readers can link directly to Barnes and Noble come to purchase the books on line.

Select Barnes & Noble locations will also feature special in-store Wired displays leading off of new nonfiction book title sections, that will host a selection of related cyber-business and culture titles recommended by Wired editors, along with the current issue of Wired magazine and a selection of Wired books. In addition to enhancing the nonfiction section in-store, the display invites visitors to browse the online bookstore by directing them to the Wired/Barnes & Noble URL (www.hotbot.com). Barnes & Noble will introduce the Wired in-store displays nationally in early summer.


ThrustMaster To Enter Video Game Controller Market

ThrustMaster, Inc., a leading manufacturer of game controllers for PC-based entertainment, located in Hillsboro, OR, is introducing a line of controller products for the Sony Playstation and the Nintendo 64 video game console market in the third quarter of 1998.

ThrustMaster plans to produce console controllers with the same level of quality, realism and control which have made its current line of PC peripherals such landmark products. "Unlike many of our competitors, our console products will not be simple replicas of our PC products. We understand that console play is very different than PC play, and we are designing our controllers to suit the console game audience--with significant consumer testing--an important point of differentiation."


Red Devil Energy Drink Enters U.S. Market

Red Devil is a new high energy drink that has been successful in Europe and is now about to enter the U.S. market targeting those who need to get more hours, more intensity, and more fun out of the day or the night.

As distinguished from typical caffeinated sodas and sports drinks, Red Devil provides taurine (an amino acid), caffeine, and vitamins (Vitamin C, B 6, B 12, Pantothenic Acid and Niacin) to give the body and mind a quick and lasting energy boost. It has a red berry-citrus flavor, which should be served chilled or over ice. Red Devil energy drink is being supported with point of sale material.


Coca-Cola Names C. Frenette, To Head Mktg.

The Coca-Cola Company announced that Charles S. Frenette will assume responsibilities as Chief Marketing Officer, succeeding Sergio Zyman, who resigned following five very successful years as Chief Marketing Officer. Mr. Frenette has been with Coca-Cola for more than 20 years, most recently as President of the South Africa Division. Mr. Frenett moves into his new assignment as the role of marketing continues to grow and progress.


Hiram Walker Appoints E. Puleo, Kahlua Senior Brand Manager

Elizabeth Puleo has been named Kahlua Senior Brand Manager, announced Charlie Metzger, Group Marketing Director, Coffee & Creams Group.

Puleo joins Hiram Walker from Clairol in Stamford, CT, where she held positions of increasing responsibility in the New Products Development Group.


Marvel Names A. Holtz Sr. V.P. Sales & Mktg.

Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc., New York, NY, has named Alex Holtz as Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, according to an announcement by Joseph Calamari, President and COO. Mr. Holtz will oversee newsstand sales, direct market sales, mass market sales and direct response/subscriptions for Marvel Comics Group. He will be responsible for strategic direction&served most recently as Senior Vice President, Administrative Sales Director at Penguin, USA.
