Pepsi & Microsoft Create High Tech Holiday Promotion

Pepsi and Microsoft have joined forces for a "High-Tech Holiday" promotion, offering a $5 consumer rebate on Microsoft CD-ROM titles with Pepsi and Microsoft proofs-of-purchase.

BBDO Worldwide, New York, joined with animation specialists Blue Sky Studios and Pixar Animation Studios to create digitally animated characters that are featured in a special thematic television commercial as well as on 200 million Pepsi packages and point-of-purchase displays. The fully integrated promotion was created by TL Partnership, Dallas, TX.

The promotion will also be supported through Pepsi World, the company’s world wide web site, which is offering sweepstakes opportunities to win Microsoft and Pepsi products, Pepsi screensavers and holiday e-cards featuring the seasonal characters.


Apple Computer Licenses Brand For Chain of Cyber-Based "Apple Cafes"

Apple Computer, Inc. announced that is has licensed its name and products to Mega Bytes International BVI, for an international chain of cyber-based theme restaurants bearing the name "Apple Cafes." The first site is scheduled to open in Los Angeles in late 1997.

"Technology is rapidly becoming an even more integral part of our lives with the advent of multimedia and the Internet," said Satjiv Chahil, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Marketing, Apple Computer, Inc. "It is our intention to leverage the most unique aspects of Apple in creating an environment where people in all walks of life and levels of computer literacy can communicate and socialize; in essence, a cyber cafe ‘for the rest of us.’"

The company’s identity will be interwoven into every aspect of the restaurant, reflecting a design that is truly and distinctly Apple. Besides being a great ‘experience zone,’ it will be an exciting Apple technology showcase, according to Chahil.

Mega Bytes International has retained Landmark Entertainment Group, a North Hollywood-based design and production firm to conceptualize the sites.


GMEV1 Electric Vehicle Introduced

Saturn Corp. has announced the availability of the General Motors EV1 electric vehicle through its retail facilities in the greater Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Tucson marketing areas.

"We’re excited, our retailers are enthused and the prospective EV1 owners eagerly await the arrival of this milestone introduction," said Joe Kennedy, Saturn’s V. P., Sales, Service & Marketing.

Estimated annual electricity costs are $420 at 10 cents per kW-hr (typical peak use rate) and $126 at 3 cents per kW-hour (typical off-peak rate). For comparison, a gasoline-powered vehicle averaging 28 miles per gallon at $1.30 per gallon would have an estimated annual fuel cost of $696.


Sunsweet Introduces Lighter Bake

Sunsweet, Pleasanton, CA, has introduced Sunsweet Lighter Bake a 100% fat- and cholesterol-free baking ingredient that replaces butter, margarine, oil or shortening in scratch recipes and packaged mixes.

Made from a blend of dried plums and apples, this new fat “imposter” creates moist,chewy baked goods that are lower in fat.

"We know that more and more Americans are interested in reducing the fat in their diet, but we also know that taste is still the most important factor in deciding what to eat," said Erin Hull, Sunsweet’s V.P. Marketing.

Lighter Bake is located in the cooking oil or baking ingredients section of supermarkets nationwide.


Henschel-Steinau Names M. Luberto,, Creative Director

Henschel-Steinau, Inc., an Englewood, NJ-based p.o.p. display firm, has appointed Michael Luberto as Creative Director, according to an announcement by H. Aaron Henschel, President.

"Michael will supervise all creative efforts in addition to developing more direct lines of communication between the Creative Production and Sales Departments," Henschel said.
